Tonkatsu Ichikatsu in Sumida

It was a little hard to me to find the place but just follow your map. It's a cozy restaurant with counter seats. The service was efficient and excellent. The staff would offer to refill my green tea and ice water if they noticed the cup or glass getting empty. I'm no expert but it was the best katsu I have ever had. The batter was crispy but light, a lot less oily than any other katsu I have had. The pork loin was juicy and tender, too. The miso soup and rice were very decent as well. I got this big portion for 1000 yen which I think is a steal considering the taste and quality.

Little hidden treasure. It's affordable, delicious and a clear favourite under the locals. The English menu is about as much guidance as you will get when selecting your meal. But the staff is friendly and willing to help, even with little verbal communication. You are welcomed by a warm cup of green tea, that will be refilled as many times as you wish. The bar seating provides for some entertainment while you watch your meal being prepared. A definite top choice when you want an authentic Tonkatsu experience.

Probably the best katsudon I've ever had! So nice and tasty. Outdoors has no english signage but they do have an english menu. Seating is limited and they do takeout.I would say the serving size is just a little past my personal limit so it'd be better to come in very hungry. The amount of food you get for 600 (pork loin) or 900 yen (pork fillet: thinner meat) is amazing!!

Absolutely brilliant Pork Tonkotsu. At 690 or 900 Japanese Yen for a pork chop or loin set meal this is an absolute steal. Includes an excellent miso soup, and the service/staff here are so friendly. It's worth going out of your way for!

Great katsu, cheap, fresh.

Simple concept, enter, select the size and meat cut then enjoy your meal. The meat is crumbed and cooked freshly in front of you and the meal is prepared in about 10 minutes with a full house. Even though the meal is basic and without sauce it tastes quite plain, I had to give this place 5 stars as they did an amazing job at preparing and serving. The prices are very well matches and the portion sizes are generous. I'm impressed with the customer service as well. Great little joint where 98% of the time you'll be the only non Japanese person there and ain't that a great thing.

Whenever I find myself in Ryogoku I have to eat at this tonkatsu restaurant. Perfectly battered and fried cutlets, so crispy and crunchy on the outside yet juicy and tender on the inside. You can tell the chef takes pride in his craft! Highly, highly recommended.

As good as it gets. Low price, good food, superb service. Just avoid coming between 12-14, the place is absolutely packed due to its popularity.

If you like tonkatsu or just want to try, this is a right place. Ordered a simple tonkatsu set: not expensive, but the taste was excellent

A friendly price and very tasty food!!

One of our favorite places to eat on our trip to Tokyo! Just a quick walk from the Edo-Tokyo Museum. The staff were super friendly and helpful, not to mention the food was absolutely delicious and for a great price! I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Undoubtedly the nicest atmosphere I experienced in Japan this trip, unassuming shop front and seemed like only locals were inside during the time I was inside, the chef and staff had good co-ordination from spotting plating errors to resting the cutlets, it was an enjoyable experience for just ¥690, extremely affordable!

What a gem we found when exploring the area around Edo Tokyo museum. We stopped here for lunch and the pork katsu was wildly good. I love that you could watch it being made by restaurant staff. The cabbage salad was quite good and the pork was well seasoned with just the right amount of crunch. This place seemed like a popular spot with locals which is usually a good sign :)

So so so good! Staff were so kind and happy and made us feel very welcome. Excellent price and very delicious - one set with tonkatsu, miso soup, rice, cabbage and tea was 600¥. They had an English menu too which was helpful but the chefs knew a bit of English

Having eaten a fair bitvofvtonkatsu over the years, I can fairly say this place makes the best tonkatsu I've ever had. Amazing place right under Ryogoku station.

Cost-performance is fantastic - get yourself a crispy and satisfying home-cooked ロースカツ定食 for 690 yen! What a steal. Watching the 3-4 staff work their assembly line is a joy in itself. Don't be dismayed by the line, people usually move in and out pretty quick!

Food was delicious and portions we're big for the 690 yen price we paid. The set comes with a big pork loin, big bowl of rice, giant mound of shredded lettuce, and bowl of miso soup. The pork is freshly fried to order and the staff is very friendly. One of the staff came over with an English menu upon us walking in while we sat in line on the stools to be seated. They will take your order and then seat you when a spot opens up. The 690 set is a great value and is filling! I researched a bit and figured out the 690 one can be ordered as "Rosu-katsu" or "Rosu" for short. Don't be intimidated, it is a must visit!!

Extremely authentic! No English whatsoever, no pictures, no examples, no adverts, almost no seats! A clear favourite of the locals, packed with salarymen during the lunch and dinner rushes. Try to go with someone who speaks Japanese if you want to know what's going on.Alternatively, just get the 690 yen set which includes tea, soup, pickles, rice (a lot), cabbage salad, giant deep fried pork cutlet. If you just right 690 on some paper and show it to them they may understand.The pork is tender, juicy and delicious, freshly fried. You will absolutely be full.

A Tonkatsu frequented by locals but at the same time very welcoming to the odd tourist that happens by. The staff were very friendly and the deep fried pork was amazing. Really happy I decided to walk in.

I firstly thought this place is kind of hard to go in because of the impression of exterior, traditional Japanese style, but I pushed myself to enter. I amglad. This is definitelly the best fried-pork meal in Ryogoku area!! There are only four or five major meal-sets such as Rōsu-katsu, Hire-katsu, Mixfurai(combination of friend seafood and pork) and fried oystar. So it shouldn't be that hard to order. In the weekend or on national holidays, this place is fully packed by locals! I definitelly recommend it.

Probably the best Tonkatsu I have ever had and it was only 690 yen. The best part of the restaurant was actually watching the chef and the workers cook right in front of you. I went here to eat 5 days out of the 15 days I was in Japan. It was that good. Highly recommend it if you like savory food to begin with.

Incredible place, it was my first night out in Tokyo and was looking forward to trying the famous tonkatsu. Super tasty food, and the locals were really nice to us. I’d go there every week if I lived in Tokyo

One of the best in Japan! If you like this dish, it is a must! Very good, indeed and as a foreigner, I can say I was treated very well there.

A bit confusing upon going in (a bar to eat at, there were no seats available),but the staff were v.friendly and soon sorted us out with 4 seats in a row, no mean feat during the lunch rush. GREAT pork katsu, either the chop or the loin (and from what I could make out these were pretty much the main/popular choices). Terrific value and a great advert for doing one thing, but doing it extremely well. Do it!

Crazy quality.

Great spot. We were the only foreigners in the place and they was just what I was looking for. Filled with salarymen and locals, we queued for a short time before being seated at the counter.English menu is available. We ordered pork cutlet (tonkatsu) and the meal arrived with heaped cabbage, bowl of rice, miso soup and green tea. For the price, incredible value.The food itself, amazing. You can tell the chef and the team are very proud of the product they deliver. We enjoyed watching the action in the kitchen and were very appreciative of the environment, service and food. I would certainly go out of my way in the future to come back here, but it is also conveniently located out front of the JR station.
